Steelcase engaged in a series of programs with Jump to change how it commercializes R&D ideas and brings new products to market. Together, Steelcase Advanced Marketing, and Jump worked to connect marketing and design functions and pioneer new opportunities for growth.

Large investments in customer insights and new technology with little payoff.

In the late 1990s, the furniture business was rapidly commoditizing and Steelcase needed new opportunities for profitable growth. It had invested time and money in market research to better understand its customers and in product design to turn insights into more compelling products. But the two activities weren’t connecting. The research wasn’t actionable and designers weren’t making effective use of it. Steelcase recognized these challenges and looked to Jump to turn these thorny problems into big growth opportunities.

Commercialization projects to maximize value from existing IP and technology.

Jump worked to align stakeholders across the business and shepherd new products to market, which meant discovering and defining new markets for unfamiliar break-out products.

Executive training to increase empathy and organizational effectiveness.

To bring Steelcase closer to its core customers, Jump led a team of senior managers on a series of “user safaris” to expose them to different office environments and help them understand seismic changes that have occurred in the workplace. Jump also provided executive coaching and communications support to help design and marketing leaders articulate the value of their work. Through our work together, we have helped Steelcase bring an empathic approach to its business—and drive significant growth. In the first year of Jump’s partnership with Steelcase, sales in affected categories leapt by more than 8 percent.
